Reflecting on 30 Years as an IBCLC

When I earned my IBCLC certification back in 1994, lactation consulting looked very different. Breast pumps were bulkier, hospital stays were longer, and we didn’t yet have the research or community networks that support families today. But one thing has never changed—those quiet, beautiful moments when a parent and baby find their rhythm together.

For thirty years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside families through one of life’s most meaningful transitions. From the hospital nursery to home visits, every feeding story is unique—full of courage, patience, and love. I’ve learned as much from the parents I’ve supported as they have from me.

My favorite part of this work is watching a parent move from “I don’t think I can do this” to “We did it.” That transformation still brings tears to my eyes.

In 2007, I opened Peaceful Beginnings to bring that same support into homes and private settings. It’s been a joy to serve families beyond the hospital walls—to slow down, listen deeply, and meet each parent where they are. Even after retiring from hospital practice in 2024, I can’t imagine stepping away completely. This work has shaped who I am.

Lactation support isn’t just about feeding; it’s about connection. It’s about reminding parents that they are enough, that perfection isn’t the goal, and that the small, ordinary moments matter most.

To every family I’ve met over the past three decades—thank you for letting me be part of your beginning.

With gratitude,

Linda Coppola, IBCLC
